Mary, 65
Mary was a prominent figure in her small community. She is the mother of many children and grandmother to young grandchildren. As a person she is proud, concientious and devoutly caring to the people around her. This is what makes it so difficult, as she diagnosed for early stages of dementia about a year ago, and has a hard time accepting the inverse of her previous life. She faces short-term memory loss, deterioration of balance and disfamiliarity with her surroundings. Little by little, she is now needed to be cared for, but she has too much self-respect to allow them to. All this extra attention to her needs feels to her as belittlement and an embarrasment, and as though it strips her of her dignity and integrity. But because she is loved by so many people, she needs to face this new reality at every second.
