Marie

Sex Female Age 65 Nationality Dutch Occupation Retired, ex. Council Vice-Chairman in Local Government	Biggest Challenges Accepting any new routine or method is difficult for her, since she is accustomed to a certain life.
Personality Proud. Private. Conscientious. Devoutly caring to the people around her. Puts other people ahead of her own goals. Sceptic towards technology. With the illness, a heightened sense of anger. Stubborn.	Wants/Needs Wants to keep her dignity. Wants to hold on to her sense of control. Wants to engage with her family and to continue filling her past roles.
Brief description Marie has long been a prominent figure in her small community. Her interests have always been in other people, and was famous for her many friends and connections. She is the mother of many children and grandmother to two young grandchildren. This is what makes it so difficult, as she was diagnosed with an early stage of dementia about a year ago, and has a hard time accepting the inverse of her previous life. She faces short-term memory loss, deterioration of balance and unfamiliarity with her surroundings. Little by little, she is now needed to be cared for, but she has too much self-respect to allow them to. She feels as if there's a heightened sense of pressure because she has to appear well in front of others. Attending and respecting her new needs feels to her as belittlement and an embarrassment, and as though it strips her of her dignity and integrity. But because she is loved by so many people, she needs to face this new reality every second.	Motivations Love for family and friends. Her self-importance.

Personality Light-hearted. Soft. Hard-working. Along the years with dementia, has become increasingly nervous. Anxious. Looks of defeat and exhaustion. Confused and dizzy. Still manages to speak about it in humourous terms.	Wants/Needs Wants to find ways of remembering his past. Needs to connect more with the people around him. Needs to make the most of his time in the care home.
Brief description Martijn has been living at a care home for the past three years and for him his dementia-diagnosed life has become routine. His existence at the care home is the only one he knows and he has forgotten much of his past. His wife visits him every other day but their conversations are short and impersonal, she has moved on from him in many ways. Martijn rarely sees anyone else but his nurses and the other patients at the institution, whom he does not much care for.	Motivations Hold on to his life and spirit. Remembering.
