3. Personas

Person with Dementia (PwD):

Margaret (she/her) is 72 years old and has early-stage dementia. She loves baking and cake-decorating; she used to make stunning, complex cakes. Right now, she can still walk, talk, and do daily tasks and has clear moments, although the state of her dementia is worsening over time. Her goal is to have an enjoyable day-to-day life where she doesn't need someone to help her 24/7; having autonomy over her day and enjoyment throughout the day. She wishes to decide on individual tasks throughout the day herself, and have options for communal activities in the care home, like a creative outlet.

Family:

Larry (he/him) is Margaret's only son and remaining family member. He spends most of his time playing video games and is a tech enthusiast. Although he loves his mother, he finds it tedious and stressful to have to take care of her. He wants for his mom not to be lonely and her to have autonomy, but also doesn't want to be the only one able to keep her company and be able to live his own life. He wishes he could just visit her whenever he wants to such that they both have their autonomy and social lives again.

Nurse:

Pedro (he/him) is a 36 years old nurse at the care center. He needs to take care of 20 people and tends to take too much time on each person since his own grandmother used to have dementia and he empathises. His goal is for his patients' dementia to deteriorate slower and for them to be able to live as satisfying a day-to-day life as possible. He wants to have more time for personal interactions and be less pressured to move from room to room quickly, whilst still treating all patient equally and fairly. He wants to be sure all patients are taken care of in terms of medicine, appointments, and their needs in general. Outside of work, he spends his free time out in nature, hiking in the summer, skiing in the winter.
