Overview

Who is the main subject?

  • People medically diagnosed with early-stage dementia (henceforth, person with dementia; PwDs).

What are the PwD's goals?

  • The PwD's goal is to alleviate stress & anxiety when dealing with memory loss and (or, in tandem with) social interactions.
  • The PwD's goal is also to connect with memories, relationships and personal data, forgotten by way of memory loss.

How does the design solution (henceforth, the system) help to solve the problems of a PwD with early-stage dementia?

  • The system helps the PwD through human interaction, using the NAO social robot (henceforth, NAO or Robot).
  • The system uses natural conversation and movements to interact and help the PwD.
  • The system's physical presence & the qualities of its conversational abilities helps the PwD.

What are the goals of the system?

  • The system's primary goal is to act as a knowledge base of the PwD's personal/familial relationships. The system's goals are also detailed in Objectives.

In what environment can the system be implemented?

  • The system will be stationed in a room where the PwDs spend most of their day.
  • The system also exists in a digital space, one that the Guardian can access, and update the the system's database.

Activities

What activities will be available for the subject by using the system?

The subject interacts with the system through natural conversation. This includes:

  • Asking questions
  • Answering questions
  • Giving commands
  • Elaborating on a previous topic
  • Saving topics for a later time
  • Saving a list of preferences or tasks
