Week 1

This week I got introduced to Socio-Cognitive Engineering. The first lecture we got information about how the course would work and what we can expect the upcoming weeks. I learned about human-centered design & user experience. And I got introduced to the ReJAM project. This was a good example of what our project would look like. I formed a group with 3 other students; Mees, Rick and Clemente. All of them are Robotics students so that was something nice we found out.

On Tuesday we got a lecture from Emma van Zoelen. She told us to Be able to specify our use-case and start designing a Hybrid Intelligence system. This was a bit vague at the beginning, but got more clear when we got access to the XWiki. We got introduced to the foundation, specification and evaluation of the project. In the Lecture we created a user story and made a storyboard which we uploaded on the XWiki.

We met up as a group on Wednesday and worked on the Quick Start on the XWIki where we finished our use case, functions, claims, effects and the storyboard.

Week 2

This week we got a presentation from Rebecca Schaefer. She works at the university in Leiden but gave us a guest lecture about the brain, dementia and music. This was something we as a group all liked, so we decided to incorporate this in our project when we start developing our prototype. This week we continued working on the Quick start and started with the Foundations. We came up with for example: the personas, the environment and the problem scenario. For me as someone with a background in mechanical engineering this was a bit weird to do. I never had to do this before. But after a whie, I got the gist of it and I knew how to approach this and what to do.

Week 3

This week we got a lecture on Monday, explaining a lot about Socio-Cognitive Engineering. We tried to incorporate everything we had learned about SCE in our project when we worked on it on Tuesday and Wednesday. We also started working on our first presentation. We came up with the lay out and the content we wanted to discuss and divided the work among us as a group. Rick and Mees would present this presentation, while Clemente and I would do the last presentation.

Week 4

We met up on Monday as a group to finish and fine tune our presentation. We really wanted to show what we did the last couple of weeks, and to give a nice presentation. I think it went well. When looking around I felt like others were engaged and listening. That is always a good thing because it shows people like what you are telling. I also listened to the other presentations, and I tried to pick up stuff we could incorporate in our own project to make it better. On Tuesday we learned about design rationale and patterns and on Wednesday we met up as a group and worked out our definitive prototype. We could do this because of the feedback we received during the presentations. Mees and Rick primarily worked on the MiroCloud, while Clemente and I continued with the XWiki.

Week 5

On Monday Clemente and I asked professor Neerincx about our prototype idea. He wasn’t very positive about our idea. It fell outside of the scope of SCE, so we had to come up with another idea, and that’s primarily what we focused on this week. We changed our prototype and changed the XWiki accordingly. We started working on the evaluation methods, because soon we had to test our prototype. Mees and Rick continued working on the software side of the project, while Clemente and I continued working on the XWiki and our prototype.

Week 6

This week we got a lecture on Monday about inclusive design and how to incorporate this in our project. On Tuesday when there was no lecture we continued working on the XWiki. We changed several subsections and improved what we already had and finalized our prototype code. We now had to test it with the actual Miro dog. We made and appointment with Ruud who told us to meet him in the Insyght Lab, where we worked a couple of hours on Wednesday and Thursday. The Miro robot was working perfectly and we were ready to conduct our experiment.

Week 7

We wanted to check one time before inviting other students and friends to conduct the experiment if the Miro dog was still working. Unfortunately this was not the case anymore. There were some problems with the cliff sensors. We tried solving those but with no luck. In the end we had to conduct our experiment in another room where we didn’t have any problems with the cliff sensors. When we fixed this problem we conducted our experiment, the whole of Thursday afternoon. Were we were able to do finish all the experiments. We asked our participants to fill in a informed consent form before the experiment. After the experiment we asked them to fill in a form on Qualtrics via their phone or laptop. This week we also started working on our final presentation.

Week 8

Because we didn’t have a lot of time to work on the presentation last week. We met up on Monday to finalize the presentation, Clemente and I had to give. We were scheduled to do our presentation on Tuesday. Everyone of us had a part they had to do. I worked for example on the results, conclusions and recommendations.

On Tuesday we gave our presentation. I think it went very well. We got several questions afterwards but I felt like we answered those fine.

The rest of the week we worked as a group on the XWiki and we tried to make it as good as possible before we submit it next week on Tuesday. We will meet on Tuesday once more, to go over the XWiki one more time before we turn it into a PDF and submit it.
