b. Design Scenario

As a foundation for the storyboard, several design scenarios have influenced the final design decisions.

The design scenario of care centre head Pieter and a caretaker Daphne. Pieter wants to incentivize the residents to move more for the sake of their well-being but Daphne (and caretakers like her) does not always have the time to motivate and take residents outside. Therefore, Pieter wants to implement a robot that can take residents on walks and enable them to do so even when a caretaker or family member can't take them (without replacing human-assisted walks entirely). Pieter also wants a system to keep track of the movements of the residents enabling him to see who has a low activity level. Therefore, he wants some kind of logging system as well so that all residents are prompted to do more movement.

The design scenario of PwD Maria, who is used to and also enjoys going on walks in the garden where she can sit and have a moment of rest, or practice her hobby: knitting. However, she is scared and hesitant to go out to the garden on her own. She has light dementia and is diabetic. She enjoys walking with her daughters Laura and Sarah, but that is not always possible since they also need to spend time with their families and children, especially with one of them having a less than 1-year-old child. Caretakers do not always have the time to take Maria either, so she could benefit from having a robot that can help enable her to go when she wants and on her schedule, without having to wait for somebody. This increases her independence and autonomy and gives her a sense of her "normal" and "regular" life continuing.

The design scenario of Bob, who has a history of alcoholism and anger issues. He suffers from Korsakoff syndrome due to his past alcoholism. He enjoys collecting coins and taking a walk in the garden where he can meditate or do some light exercise which tends to help him with his emotional regulation. This has been a problem in the past with the caretakers who often have to take the consequences of Bob's anger problems. They wish to be able to have breaks from taking him to the park as he can get frustrated when he can't stay as long as he wants and it is difficult to handle his emotions overall. This could be alleviated by the robot taking him on walks to the park or into the garden when he feels like he wants to spend time there. Bob also does not have any family, which means that he benefits from a social companion, which the robot system could also provide.
