Retaining memory through reminiscence
Upside | The system narrates stories based on the patient's past experiences and asks questions to the patient to help them reminiscence about their memories. The system can also play the patient's favourite songs during narration to create a soothing and familiar ambience and create yet another opportunity for the patient to reminisce. |
Downside | The patient may not remember their past experiences clearly and the system's questions may end up agitating them more The patient may not be in the mood to listen to music or their interests may have changed unbeknownst by the caregiver or family member |
Use Cases | |
Tests | - Implicit feedback through usage patterns of patients The robot can look at the patient's facial expression and if it notices that the patient is getting agitated, it can stop asking questions and continue with the narration The robot can also stop asking questions if it notices the patient hasn't responded or responded negatively to a few questions in succession - Explicit control by the formal caregiver The formal caregiver too can instruct the robot to resume the narration and stop asking questions in case the robot has not yet learnt to pick up the patient's expressions accurately |
