Short description of ontology
In this ontology, concepts are described that are related to the PAL domain, without any particular epistemological background. It describes the characteristics of diabetes, the PAL system, the users and locations. In addition, information necessary for specific dialogue modelling in the project has been put into this ontology. These classes and properties constitute the information state of the dialogue components.

Ontology development
The ontology is developed in an ad-hoc, iterative manner. The ontology was created based on the domain knowledge of diabetes mellitus type 1, the PAL system and the users. During the development of the PAL system, the ontology was elaborated on this domain based on the developers' needs.
Ontology structure
The ontology consists of domain-related classes, properties and relations. The classes could be subs of the main class "PALDomain" (e.g. actor, activity, food, ..) or a sub of another class (e.g. 'pen' and 'pump' are subs of 'device'). This is implemented in an intuitive and practical manner.
Evaluation and results
This ontology was implemented and used in the PAL user experiments. For PAL, it contains all domain knowledge that is required for the PAL system to function as desired.
